Kristin Chenoweth: The Gamma Phi Who Took Broadway by Storm
Kristin Chenoweth may be just under five feet tall, but her voice can fill a Broadway theater—and her personality is even bigger. The Tony and Emmy-winning actress, singer, and author has conquered the stage, screen, and recording studio. But before all that, she became a Gamma Phi Beta at Oklahoma City University, where she found a sisterhood that cheers her on every step of the way.
Finding Her Voice (and Her Sisters)
Kristin grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where she started singing in church and performing in local talent competitions. She was a natural performer from the start and worked hard to refine her craft. She earned a vocal scholarship to Oklahoma City University (OCU), studying musical theater for her undergraduate degree and completing a master’s in opera performance.
At OCU, she joined the Beta Omicron chapter of Gamma Phi Beta, gaining a built-in community of supportive women and she never forgot the friendships and values from her sorority days.
Broadway Breakout & Hollywood Success
Kristin initially planned to pursue a career in opera and even won a prestigious scholarship to study at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts. Just before heading there, she auditioned for a regional theater production of "Animal Crackers" at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse—and landed the role of Arabella Rittenhouse. After her regional theater run, she made the leap to New York City, where she pursued musical theater full-time. This bold move set her on the path to Broadway stardom.
Her Broadway debut in "Steel Pier" (1997) put her on the map, but it was her role as Sally Brown in "You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown" (1999) that earned her a Tony Award. Then came "Wicked" (2003), where she played Glinda the Good Witch—a performance so iconic that fan associated her with the role for decades. (In 2024, the blockbuster "Wicked" movie propelled Arianna Grande into that spot.)
Kristin Chenoweth's versatility extends beyond the stage and screen into the realm of voice acting, where she has brought numerous animated characters to life. One particularly memorable role was that of Gabi, a hilariously melodramatic and romantically inclined poisonous frog in the animated film "Rio 2" (2014). This character's unrequited love for another frog, voiced by Bruno Mars, showcased Chenoweth's comedic timing and vocal range in a fun, unexpected way.
Along with her animated adventures, Kristin has released several albums that showcase her stunning soprano. Her 2008 holiday album, "A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas", even hit No. 1 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart—because, what's more festive than Kristin Chenoweth singing Christmas music?
From there, she expanded into television and film, winning an Emmy for "Pushing Daisies" and making memorable appearances on "Glee", "The West Wing", and "Trial & Error". She’s also starred in Hallmark movies, proving she’s just as at home in a cozy romance as she is belting out Broadway hits.
"I'm constantly learning, and that is the greatest gift of life in my opinion—to always be learning and growing."
Chenoweth's dynamic career reflects her multifaceted talent and her ability to engage audiences through various artistic expressions.
More Than Just a Performer
Kristin is so much more than a star—she’s a woman who gives back in meaningful ways. She founded the Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Education Fund to support young performers and arts education programs. As an advocate for women in the arts, LGBTQ+ rights, and adoption awareness, she’s passionate about causes close to her heart, especially adoption, since it’s part of her own story.
Kristin found love with Josh Bryant, a talented musician and guitarist for the country band Backroad Anthem. Their love story kicked off at her niece’s wedding in 2016, where Josh’s band was playing. They reconnected at her nephew’s wedding in 2018, and the sparks flew from there. And yes, they've even shared the stage, including a heartfelt rendition of “Desperado” at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. (Proof that you don’t need to arrive with a plus-one to end up with one!)
Josh proposed on October 27, 2021, on the rooftop of the romantic Rainbow Room in New York City, with the glittering skyline as their backdrop. After she said yes, they celebrated with an intimate dinner at Fresco by Scotto, one of their fave NYC restaurants. Nearly two years later, they tied the knot on September 2, 2023, in a beautiful ceremony in Dallas, Texas.
The couple now splits their time between Nashville, where they’ve found a welcoming community and a love for the city’s music scene, and New York City, where they enjoy the energy, culture, and—ofc—Broadway. Their adorable rescue dog, Thunder—a mix of poodle and Maltese—was even the ring bearer at their wedding, adding an extra touch of joy to their special day. Thunder, along with their other dog and a cat named Mouse, makes both homes that much warmer, always bringing playful energy and love wherever they go.
"I want to be a Christian like Christ—loving and accepting of other people."
Kristin’s faith is at the core of who she is, and she’s never shy about sharing that part of herself. And it’s this faith that helps her handle everything—from performing on stage to navigating life’s ups and downs. With humor, love, and a whole lot of faith, Kristin shows us how to roll with the punches and keep going strong.
When she’s not lighting up the stage, Kristin’s infectious holiday spirit takes center stage. She’s the first one to deck the halls—and we mean early. She loves Christmas so much, she starts decorating as soon as the calendar hits November 1st. Her holiday enthusiasm led her to team up with HomeGoods in 2024 for their “Deck the Everything Day,” encouraging everyone to spread holiday cheer in their own special way. In 2023, she partnered with Command Brand as their "Partner-in-Cheer," sharing her love for the holidays and helping others bring the festive fun to their own homes.
While Kristin’s career keeps her busy, she’s been open about the challenges she faces behind the scenes. She’s spoken honestly about living with Ménière's disease, an inner ear disorder that causes vertigo and hearing loss, and how it’s impacted her life. She’s also a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, often sharing how faith, humor, and the love of family have been her anchors during both personal and professional challenges.
A Gamma Phi Beta Who Inspires
Kristin Chenoweth has done it all—Broadway, TV, movies, music, books—but what makes her truly special is her authenticity. She’s talented, hilarious, and unapologetically herself, proving that hard work, passion, and a great support system (like Gamma Phi Beta!) can take you anywhere.
Gamma Phi Beta’s motto is “Founded on a rock,” and Kristin is proof that when you have strong foundations—whether in sisterhood, faith, or sheer determination—you can build something incredible.
