NPC Sororities By the Numbers: Geography Edition!
If you had to guess which state has the most NPC sorority chapters, you’d probably say Texas, Georgia, or maybe even California, right? NOPE. The unexpected queen of Greek life is… Pennsylvania, with a whopping 246 active chapters. That’s right, PA isn’t just leading the pack—it has more sorority chapters than Alabama and Georgia combined. Who knew? Maybe it’s the vast network of colleges, maybe it’s the deep-rooted tradition of campus life, but either way, Pennsylvania is the MVP of sisterhood.
Meanwhile, California and Texas come in second and third with 224 and 170 chapters, respectively. Texas, you okay? Turns out, despite its massive size and football culture, it’s lagging behind PA in the sorority race. New York comes in fourth (162), which makes sense given the massive SUNY system and all of the liberal arts schools tucked away in upstate towns. But let’s be real—when people think New York, they’re usually picturing Broadway and bagels, not bid day.
And here are a few more surprises from the data:
-
Ohio (158 chapters) actually has more than Florida (142). Not exactly what you'd expect given Florida’s massive universities and sunshine-fueled Greek life. Turns out, the Buckeye State is bringing the sisterhood strong.
-
Alabama has 90 chapters—Yes, University of Alabama may own #rushtok, but the state doesn't even make the top 10 in total sorority chapters.
-
Mississippi (35 chapters) has far fewer than Massachusetts (68). Despite being home to 2 SEC teams, Mississippi lags behind a state better known for clam chowder and a marathon than Greek Life.
-
Even with Arizona’s giant schools and party reputation, Kansas somehow comes out ahead with 46 chapters to Arizona's 37.
-
Hawaii (2) and Alaska (2) tie for the lowest chapter count, but hey, at least they’re in the game!
And what about Canada? Across the entire country, there are 43 active sorority chapters—the same as Connecticut. Ontario leads with 20 chapters, while British Columbia has 7, Alberta has 6, Quebec and Manitoba each have 2, and Nova Scotia has just one: an Alpha Gamma Delta chapter at Dalhousie University. Yes, one lonely little chapter holding it down for the entire province.
The states you expect to be Greek Life powerhouses hold a lot of top slots, but Pennsylvania and California quietly dominate the leaderboard. So next time you picture the most sorority-packed state, swap out "Friday Night Lights" for a soft pretzel—because PA is running the show.
